What Size Portable Power Station Does Camping Need?

Size a power station from the devices you intend to run, the hours they run, and the recharge opportunity—not from the largest number on the box.

Separate watts from watt-hours

Watts describe how much power a device needs at a moment. Watt-hours describe how much energy the battery can store.

A 60-watt device running for five hours uses roughly 300 watt-hours before conversion losses. Real systems also lose energy through the inverter, cables, temperature, and standby consumption.

Build a realistic energy list

High-heat appliances can empty a moderate station quickly even when their run time is short. Refrigerators use less power than their maximum rating suggests because the compressor cycles, but hot weather increases demand.

Use a reserve

After estimating daily consumption, add a practical reserve for cold weather, device changes, and imperfect solar conditions. A station that is theoretically exact for one day can become frustrating when clouds or an extra device appear.

Check output, not only capacity

The inverter must handle the running wattage and startup surge of the connected equipment. Also check the number and type of AC, USB, 12-volt, and regulated outputs required by the campsite.

Plan the recharge path

Wall charging works before departure. Vehicle charging can extend a road trip. Solar can support longer stays, but panel wattage, sun angle, shade, temperature, and the station’s input limit determine the result.
