Camping Sleep Systems: Cot, Mattress, Pad, or Hammock?

The best camp bed is the one that supports your body, fits the shelter, insulates from the ground, and still matches the way you travel.

Comfort and insulation are different jobs

A thick surface may feel comfortable but still allow heat loss. The sleep system needs both support and an insulation strategy appropriate for the conditions.

Self-inflating mattresses

These are the comfort benchmark for many car campers. They combine foam and air, offer broad support, and work especially well for side sleepers. The cost is packed volume.

Backpacking air pads

Modern insulated pads pack small and can provide strong warmth-to-weight performance. Width, noise, valve design, inflation method, and the feel of the baffles matter as much as the weight number.

Cots

Cots raise the sleeper and simplify getting up, but they use substantial tent space and can create cold airflow below the body. A pad on top of the cot may still be needed.

Sleeping bags and quilts

Temperature ratings are not universal comfort promises. Sleep clothing, metabolism, wind, moisture, pad insulation, and whether the sleeper runs warm or cold all affect the result. Leave margin rather than planning directly at the advertised limit.
